A word about "The Classics"
Well, they certainly are classic
- those two guys who make up "The Classics." They
are a couple of guys who love music-all kinds of music. Ron Christianson,
in the
role of Dean Martin, and Bob Saulsbury, portraying Frank Sinatra,
both began their musical careers by forming rock & roll bands
in junior high school. However, they were not in the same band as
Bob was born and raised in Appleton, Minnesota, and Ron in Willmar,
Minnesota.
Throughout their 30's and 40's they both continued playing
and singing in various local bands-alas, again in separate bands.
As they got older they began to dislike the equipment hauling and
late hours that band gigs brought. They both transferred their musical
talents to early Sunday mornings. Even though they knew each other
previously, it was in their church's contemporary music group they
first performed together. Ron played guitar and Bob played the upright
bass, while both provided vocals. From this blessed start, Bob and
Ron found they enjoyed performing together. They decided to work
up a musical skit for an evening church fundraiser-they picked the
music of Sinatra.
The next thing
they knew they had purchased their own tuxedos! In order to pay off that bill,
they took a few small bookings in Willmar. Ron and Bob started out small and
didn't even have a name, but they had settled on their musical genre-the "Rat
Pack" songs as performed by Sinatra and Martin in Las Vegas during the 1960's.
After being asked multiple times for the name of their duo, they settled on "The
Classics." This was a name bestowed on them early on by a woman
attending
one of their first performances - "You guys are classics!"
Ron's second
love is technology/equipment-that's why "The Classics'" sound
is so wonderful - he constantly buys all the newest gadgets! It is also why their
performances
have that Vegas look. Besides dragging Bob into the current century
as far as computerized musical equipment goes, Ron does the bookings
for "The
Classics." Bob is responsible for writing "
The Classics" dialogue, skits, and programs, as well as handling the marketing
and sales of their CDs. Why, he even gets to learn Minnesota and federal small
business tax laws! Besides those tasks, he is an experienced actor and often
performs humorous vignettes within the "Classics" performances.
"The
Classics" have kept pretty busy since their beginning in 2002. "Baby
Boomers" do love Vegas and that great "Rat Pack" music. Ron and
Bob perform often in various Minnesota cities and even travel to adjoining states
from time to time. So here they are again-older but not much wiser-they are back
to late nights and hauling heavy speaker equipment and light bars. I guess that's
why they have those two young guys with them. Scott Nelson, of Golden Ear Studio
in Spicer, (320.796.5999) creates their performance sound tracks and runs the
sound board. Mike Saulsbury runs the lighting system. Oh, and incidentally, he
is also "Frank's" son. Mike even has his own music CD, which was recorded
at Golden Ear Studio, of course! Finally "Frank" (Bob)
has achieved his dearest wish-performing with one of his kids!
